Rivka Galchen’s first novel, Atmospheric Disturbances, is at once scientifically detailed and psychologically charged. When Leo Liebenstein’s wife, Rema, comes home one seemingly ordinary day, he is convinced that she is an imposter, a “simulacrum.” This woman look exactly like his wife, smells like her, carries the same bag as her and speaks in the same Argentine accent. But, Leo, a psychiatrist, has a “feeling” that sends him on a quest to find his real love. Leo’s journey is maddening, turbulent, and heart-breaking. It’s also complicated by two characters: Harvey, one of Leo’s patients, and Tzvi Gal-Chen. Harvey believes he works for the Royal Academy of Meteorology deciphering weather clues on page 6 of the New York Post. Gal-Chen actually works for the Royal Academy of Meteorology and is sending Leo messages via his blackberry, possibly from beyond the grave. Through it all Leo’s devotion to the “real” Rema is irrational, yet strong. It drives him out of the Unites States and across South America in search of something he might never find. This novel seems to speak to the changeability of love and marital devotion. One day you wake up next to someone you’ve loved for years only to find that they are not the same person they once were. Galchen has taken this common place problem and turned it into an epic journey of self exploration.
