My friend, Jim is a walking dictionary of useless trivia. He is fascinating to spend time with though. Partly because of the trivia but mainly because he’s good riding buddy. "Aaaaaa, what’s up," Jim yelled across the customer lounge of Adventure Harley-Davidson as he saddled toward me in his black leather Harley® gear. It was Turkey Bowling day at Adventure H-D and we planned to meet there and try our hand a tossing a turkey. Adventue was having some FREE pizza at noon that we planned to partake of. "Just a hangin’ dude," I replied in my coolest voice as I adjusted my Harley-Davidson® cap. "Check it out, my baby just gave me this ring for our anniversary. You know garnets are suppose to protect the journeyers. That’s what we are man. Ridin’ on our Harley’s across the nation. Yeah a garnet is January’s birthstone also. A garnet means safe travel and fast homecoming for loved ones," Jim rambled. "Really! Bet you don’t have a clue about any other birthstone," I razzed him knowing full well that he could probably talk all day about everyone of the birthstone gems. "Dude, prepare to lay down your money. What month were you born in," Jim cocked his head sideways as he inquired. "February, 25, 1966 friend, and proud to be alive," I said. "Aaah, royalty. Amethyst, February’s birthstone is the gemstone sought after in history for the crowns of royalty. It symbolizes power and status," Jim laughed as I pulled my shoulders back and strutted around the customer lounge at Adventure H-D. "I knew I was special. Hey, lets give this Turkey a toss while you tell me about March’s birthstone." "Well the March birthstone is an Aquamarine. It was thought to bestow courage, insight and victory. They say it releases anger and negativity and gives you mental peace, clarity and balance. You know I need to buy by friend Jake one of those Aquamarines," Jim rumbled with laughter as he gave the frozen turkey a toss. The turkey landed right in the bullseye and a round of applause went up from the peanut gallery watching and awaiting their turn. Nicki handed Jim his prize and he yelped, "You are up next dude." "What does April’s birthstone symbolize," I asked as I grabbed the frozen turkey. "The diamond, April’s birthstone birthstone, means to enhance competence, trust and love. The ancient Greeks thought diamonds were splinters of stars dropped down to earth. Some thought they were the tears of Gods or crystal lightening. Diamonds are harder than any other substance on earth. One more thing, the Egyptians believed that the vein of love ran directly from the heart to the top of the third finger in the left hand. That’s why the wedding rings are placed there to this day," Jim tipped his hat and winked as the turkey I had just tossed hit the side board and bounced around, landing in the no prize zone. Jim had gained a few interested bikers needing to hear more birthstone trivia. We all ambled back to Adventure H-D’s comfy customer lounge and sit down just as hot steaming pizza was being served. "My wife was born in May," I said getting the trivia flowing again. "The May birthstone is an emerald. Ancients said it symbolizes peace of mind and makes you serene and it is a symbol of love and fidelity. They used to give it to people with eye disease because it was soothing and relaxing for your eyes," Jim stated then sunk his teeth into a slice of pepperoni pizza. "I was born in June," blurted a tall lanky biker standing by Jim. "Man, June’s birthstone is the Pearl. Indian’s had a legend that pearls were heavenly dewdrops that fell to the sea. In India the old time warriors attached the pearls to their weapons. It means there was sorrow for the ones killed by the weapons. Some call the Alexandrite and Moonstone birthstones for June." We all laughed as someone went throw the frozen turkey and it slipped out of their hands and slid backwards landing right beside of Jim’s Harley-Davidson® Riding Boots. "Hey, since we are going in order I want to know about my July birthstone," yelled Matt from the service department. "Eternal love is symbolized by the July’s birthstone the Ruby. The ancients said it had magical power and could ward off evil. Some said it helps overcome fear. Old lore says a ruby will bring you good fortune." The smell of pizza circled around us as motorcycle horns started to blow and people were yelling and clapping. Evidently someone had just bought a new Harley-Davidson® motorcycle and Adventure H-D staff were serenading them. "Ok what’s the scoop on an August birthstone," I nagged as five of us biker enthusiasts listened intently and chomped on pizza. "The Peridot is the August birthstone." Pirates liked the gem to protect them from evil. It is known as the evening emerald. Queen Cleopatra preferred Peridot over other gems. Many of them come from a mine high in the mountains of Pakistan," Jim sighed as if he were tired but we all knew he loved flaunting his knowledge around. "Well September is when I got my first Harley-Davidson® motorcycle. So that month means a lot to me. Got anything on September," I inquired as a burly biker stepped up to the Coke machine and said I’m gonna treat that guy to a Coke. Jim grinned and said, "Hey friend thanks for the quencher. Now let’s see. A sapphire is the September’s birthstone. It brings clarity to your mind. Sapphires symbolize purity and wisdom. Legend has it that the Sapphire had such strong power that a venomous snake put in a container made of sapphire would die real fast. Sapphires were used as a healing agent in ancient times. Sapphires were said to have power to get rid of envy and jealousy and believed to promote fidelity in marriage." We were drinking sodas and listening to Jim. A couple of people were applauding each time he gave us a trivia factoid. "My son was born in October." "You all know that an Opal is the October’s birthstone some say it is a Tourmaline. Aborigines of Australia say the Opal was created where the rainbow touched the earth," Jim snickered and belted, "OK, I’ve got two more birthstone months to go and I know you all are dying to hear, so here goes. The November birthstone is a Topaz or Citrine. Ancients said it protected against evil thoughts and snake venom. It is thought to uplift and encourage a person. Well, last but not least is December’s birthstone the Blue Topaz or Turquoise. The Topaz means strength and to shine. It is said to be calming and give a peaceful night’s sleep, and restore sanity. Legend has it is that Topaz is able to warn the wearer of danger and change color in the presence of poison. That’s the legends boys. What do ya think," Jim looked around the crowd with a twinkle in his eye. "I’ll tell you what I think," I said as I looked around, "I think I’m gonna head back to the parts department and look for a new seat." "Yeah, I gotta get some oil," said one of the other guys. "Hey man thanks for the entertainment. That was just about as entertaining as turkey bowling, but since I won a coupon I think I’ll go redeem it." "Dude you know you can get online and shop at Adventure also," Jim exclaimed. "Yeah I do it alot. It’s .adventurehd.com." We scattered and started to shop. I knew that we’d be here again in the near future. I’d be hanging with my ridin’ buddy Jim and we’d be livin’ the Adventure.
