Living in a dorm room can often leave students feeling claustrophobic. If you’re lucky, you only have to share the space with one other person. Think about how students living in triples or quads must feel! Not only do you have less space for all your stuff, half of the space is off limits as it belongs to your roommate. It is a daunting challenge to fit all of your stuff in such a confined area. Many dorm rooms wind up looking like a bomb was set off in them. What starts out as organized chaos becomes a flat out mess. However, there are some ways you can actually make your dorm room feel bigger.

One of the easiest ways to create space is to keep the floors clear of clutter. Many students wind up having piles of dirty clothes strewn all about their rooms. Invest in some hooks that you can hang in your closets or off a door. You can then hang wet towels, shirts, and jackets instead of throwing them on the floor. Some hooks have a sticky material on the back of them that you simply attach to a wall or door, while others require drilling or nailing. Check with your RA to see if you are allowed to screw things into the walls. You will be amazed at how different your room feels if you are able to see the floors!

Bed Risers are a popular dorm item these days. Instead of lofting your bed way off the floor, a bed riser simply lifts your bed about six inches off the floor. They are plastic boxes that fit under each corner of your bed frame. Six inches may not sound like much, but you would be amazed at how much space this actually creates.

Keeping your desk clean is another way to eliminate the feeling that the walls are closing in on you and your roommate. This can be a tricky task to stay on top of, but it is worth it for the sake of your dorm room and your studies. Organizing your desk will actually help you be a better student as you will know where all of your books, notes, and other resources are located. Often, the desk becomes a place where you empty your pockets, pile up takeout menus, and generally is a pit that ends up barely resembling a workspace. Keeping it neat will provide with you a place to get work done and will put you in the habit of keeping the rest of your room tidy.
