Make sure you have the essentials and the comforts of home when going off to college your freshman year. Here are some suggestions to make the transition to dorm life a little easier:

Bring some plastic utensils, bowl, cup etc for eating in your room. It’s easier to get disposable items than have to wash everything out. A bottle opener and chip clips may also come in use. A bedside lamp might be helpful if the room is not well lit and you are up late reading, an alarm clock, wastebasket, fan and lamp for your desk could be helpful accessories as well.

Milk crates or storage cubes that are easy to stack in your closet or corner of the room are useful for storing whatever you may need, or storing extra books/clothes. Under-the-bed storage bins are also a smart idea to save room and stash unneeded items away. You may want to bring your own drying rack for laundry, a calendar, some adhesive hooks for hanging things on the wall and a toolkit—you never know when a screwdriver will come in handy.

Bring your own sheets and pillowcases. Make sure you check with the school on extra long mattresses in case you need an extra long fitted sheet. Bring your own pillows as well. You might want a mattress pad (again, check on size of bed), bring your own comforter and other bedding you would like to accessorize with (duvet cover, headrest pillows, decorative pillows etc).

You will need clothes hangers (wires take up less space, plastic are easier on your clothes), laundry basket/bag, quarters for the machines and laundry detergent/stain remover. A sewing kit might also be practical in case of emergencies. There are plenty of toiletries you may need that are not in the family linen closet anymore so make sure you pack some basics; Pepto-Bismol, Imodium, aspirin, vitamin C, Neosporin, band-aids, cough drops, shower tote, shampoo/conditioner, bath and face soap, travelling soap container, toothpaste/brush, comb/brush, tweezers, nail clippers, hair dryer, razors, shaving cream, lotion/face moisturizer and Q-tips.

These are just a few fundamental suggestions to bring along your freshman year of college; you may file down this list as the years go on or before you even leave home. There are more items to bring that are more specific, but these should keep you comfortable during the initial move-in months.
