In fact, stress increases the risk of numerous diseases, can weaken your immune system, cause depression, disrupt your sleep and even cause you to gain weight. The stress of school may not seem like a big deal, but avoiding situations of extreme stress is always a good thing for your body.

Students should be aware that taking breaks when studying can actually help them do better in the long run than if they were to go on a marathon study session. Continuous learning decreases retention of the information, the exact opposite of what students are trying to accomplish. Break up your study sessions with short rests that rejuvenate you but don’t allow you to procrastinate too heavily. You’ll learn better and you’ll feel less stressed out as you’re working.

Students can also help reduce their stress levels by making time to exercise during the busy weeks of midterms and finals. Exercise will help you get your mind off of your studies for awhile, raise your endorphin levels and generally help you feel better. You can double up on your exercise benefits by exercising outdoors if the weather permits. The fresh air can help clear your mind and help you be more ready to get back to work when you need to focus.

Students should remember that even at the busiest times of the semester that their health, including their stress levels, should always be a priority. There are numerous ways to de-stress during testing times that will have students feeling better without sacrificing loads of precious study time making it a winning situation all around.
