Keeping Your Dorm Room or Apartment Clean
So you’ve finally left the nest. You’re out from under your mother’s wing and the only rules to follow are your own. Life is much faster-paced. You’re out late and in early. You and your roommates throw the wildest parties on campus. You have enough empty beer cans and kegs to build a small fort. Pizza is a favorite after late-night drunken debaucheries, and the boxes that are scattered throughout your kitchen show it. You do laundry once a month and have accumulated a pile of laundry that rivals the size and stature of the campus football stadium. The stench – oh, the stench! – permeates your entire building. But cleaning still isn’t a priority. Who has the time?

Keeping a clean apartment or dorm room isn’t complicated. Just change some of your daily behaviors and your living area will become miraculously more livable. The most important thing you can do is pick up after yourself. Put all of your dirty clothes in a hamper or basket. Stock up on trash bags and fill them after parties and meals. Be sure to take out the trash almost daily so that your apartment or dorm doesn’t turn into a garbage dump. Clean your kitchen counters and appliances after cooking a big meal. Wash your dishes immediately after use and put them in the dishwasher; that way you won’t have to worry about spending an hour scrubbing dried-up old food off of the dish surfaces. Keep your belongings in one central location. Stack your DVDs and video games next to the TV. Keep the remote on the coffee table or couch at all times or it may end up missing. Removing clutter can result in a more psychologically soothing environment. Also, be sure to dust and vacuum every couple of weeks, and change the air filter every couple of months.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, indoor air pollution can be worse than outdoor air pollution because of the amount of time we spend indoors. Pollutants include pets, smoke, cooking, heating and cooling. It’s important that you take measures to ensure you don’t suffer the consequences of poor air, like bad allergies. Make your mom proud and take care of yourself.
