There is nothing more revealing of a person’s laziness and ineptitude than misspelling the name and address of the individual who is essentially in charge of whether or not you get hired. Be sure to get all of these details correct. If you cannot find out the hiring manager’s name, simply address it "To Whom It May Concern." Another important factor in crafting a successful cover letter is to keep it concise and to the point. You do not have time to ramble in your cover letter as hiring managers want to know immediately why you are suited for the company and do not have the time or patience to read pages of text. Nix the flowery language and opt for simple, yet potent and active, sentences.

Something that many applicants forget to discuss on their cover letters is how they will personally benefit the company. Hiring managers are interested in your personal achievements and qualities, but only to a certain point. They do not need a roster of all the accolades you’ve received since middle school. Instead, they are interested in how your achievements and skills can help the company, so be sure to discuss those points as well. Use your cover letter as a tool to persuade the hiring manager that you will be an invaluable asset to the organization.
