When high school ends, so does active participation in physical activity for most people. You’re in college now and you have more important things to worry about, like partying and studying – not necessarily in that order. Then comes the onset of the "freshmen 15" and reality has smacked you right in the gut. You realize that you can no longer eat and drink what you want and not experience the unsightly repercussions.

In order to take control of your weight, you need to take control of your life. Compose a daily schedule and follow it religiously. Wake up at about the same time every morning – at least on the weekdays – and go to class. Reserve an hour for working out at your campus recreation center. Many campuses now offer state-of-the-art facilities that are funded by student fees, so any student can use them. For example, Georgia Tech’s campus rec center offers a wide array of resources for those who want to participate in a bevy of fun athletic activities. It contains tennis, racquetball and squash courts, an auxiliary court for sports like indoor soccer, roller hockey, dodge ball and team handball, a main gymnasium for volleyball, basketball, fencing and badminton, and studios for classes in self defense, martial arts, yoga, Pilates and aerobics. There are sand volleyball courts, and fields for flag football, soccer, rugby and softball, all of which are used for sports clubs, intramurals and general recreation. Outdoor recreation equipment can be rented and classes are held in kayaking, rafting, backpacking, canoeing, mountain biking and climbing. Students can also run on the 3.14 mile Tyler Brown Pi Mile trail.

It’s important that you take full advantage of the fitness resources your college provides. If your school lacks a facility like Georgia Tech’s, or just doesn’t have one, you can still have enjoyable daily workouts. Take in the beauty of your campus and jog around the same paths you take to class. Organize your own football and basketball games with your friends and play at a public park. Many apartments and dormitories offer workout rooms for their residents that remain open 24 hours. Changes in your simple everyday activities can also help you shed the extra pounds and stay slim. If you live above the first floor of an apartment or dorm, take the stairs each time you leave and enter the building. Walk to destinations that are a mile or less away instead of driving or using public transportation. Ultimately, more physical activity will help you remain healthy and stress-free. You’ll be better fit to take on the challenges of college life.
