In any case, interns, unlike full-time employees, have a definite end date to their time with the company. Employers are therefore more reluctant to offer compensation, coupled with the fact that having an unpaid worker is always preferable to organizations than having a paid one. Those who intern at unpaid positions are also more likely to be genuinely passionate about learning about the field than those who intern just for the sake of being paid. For these reasons, many more organizations offer unpaid positions rather than paid ones.

If you are deciding between whether to pursue a paid or unpaid internship, you should first consider the overall experience that you desire. Then, determine which company would give you that type of experience, disregarding whether or not it is a paid internship. If the paid position is with a large company, you may become just another anonymous intern whose primary duties are to fetch coffees and file paperwork. If the unpaid position, on the other hand, is with a smaller company, you may have the opportunity to really hone your skills in the field. In this instance, choosing the unpaid internship would be more beneficial to you in the long run. However, you also need to consider the costs of the internship. If you will be needing money for housing and commuting, you need to at least have the opportunity to work part-time to support yourself if your internship is unpaid or pays very little. All in all, when deciding between internship opportunities, whether they are paid or unpaid, consider the overall experience you will have, the expenses you will encounter, and the flexibility of your schedule should you need to work elsewhere while interning to support yourself.
