MLA Research Paper Writing
Research paper writing involves a lot of exploration on the chosen theme and also correct formatting as per the format type prescribed by the instructor. There are four main types of format pattern followed for academic purposes. These are the MLA format, APA format, Chicago format and the Harvard format. The MLA research paper format also known as the Modern Language Association of America is used mainly for writing papers on arts and humanities. This style of writing is followed mainly in the United States and Canada.
A MLA research paper in most cases does not have any title page but it is always advisable that one should follow the directions of the instructor in this case. There are certain rules that are common for almost all research paper types. The paper must be computer generated (unless otherwise specified) on a standard white 8.5 by 11 inch paper. The written text will have a margin of 1 inch on all sides. There will be a header which will carry the last name of the writer along with page numbers, at the upper right hand corner of the page. The text has to be double spaced with the font being Times New Roman and the font size 12 points. The first line of a paragraph will be indented one half inch ( five spaces) from the left margin. Space to be pressed only once after each punctuation mark.

In case of in text citation, MLA formatting will give the author’s name and page number. Without the available name of the author the title of the work cited can be used instead of the author’s name along with page number.

The reference of a MLA Research Paper would be formatted in this manner:

in case of book reference – Surname of the author followed by the first name.
Name of the book. Place of publication. Name of the publishing company. Date of publishing. Print.

In case of net reference – site name. article heading or name. Date of publishing. Name of the affiliated university or organization. web. Date of when you visited the site.

In case of journal reference – Author. Name of the article. Name of the journal. Date of publishing. Pages referred. Print.

In case of reference from a thesis paper – This would be similar to that of a book reference. The word “Diss” or “MA” must be given alongside to show that it is a thesis paper and the university name is also to be included.
