Writing a College Admission Essay

Writing a College Admission Essay
With the increasing number of applications pouring in the offices of every college, getting admission in a good college is becoming difficult day after another. The college admission essay is a reflection of your ability and opens the gate of higher education for you. Hence it is important to know how to write a good essay. There are three basic steps involved in this process:
Thinking of the various topics- Once you know that you have to write an essay, devote sufficient time in thinking of the various options on which you should write. You can choose to write on your hobby or skill, any adventurous incidence, any challenge that you faced in life and how you solved it, your struggle, a favourite book or a movie, telling about the reason for joining the college, what you want to be in life, your childhood, your role model etc. A personal essay will give the selector an idea about how you are suitable for the college seat.

• Selecting a suitable topic to write- Once you have thought of the various options, choose a topic which can be somewhat relevant to your study. A topic that can very well depict your personality, or at least mirror it, can also be a good option. It should be something which can be of interest of majority of people. Hot social or political topics should never be chosen.

• Writing the essay- When you start writing your college admission essay, you need to keep some points in mind to write effectively and write to crack the test. These are:

* Originality and Precision- The essay needs to be original, depicting your own self, your character, feelings and thoughts. Do not try to include all about yourself. If you are writing about your hobby, do not enlist all your hobbies to show that you are a jack of all trades. Write to the point and stick to the topic that you had started with. Instead of using heavy words and grand themes, use the words of day to day official conversation.

* Clarity- Every essay is like a story; it has a beginning, a middle body and the end. All three parts should be well connected to each other. Write in a manner as if you are creating an image in the reader's mind. The thought process should be clear and so should be the flow in the essay. The body should be divided into paragraphs to add clarity. Humour should be self-critical in nature or wit and not more than a pinch.

* Introduction and conclusion- Most of the people find these two more difficult to write than the body. Introduction needs to create curiosity to hold the attention of the reader. Summarization of the whole essay should be done in the conclusion and not in the introduction.

* Tone- Choose the words carefully to keep the tone of the essay balanced. If you are talking about your accomplishments or your skills, do not start bragging as if you are unbeatable. It should be a mix of pride, humility and generosity.

* Smaller errors- Do not ignore any grammatical, spelling or punctuation errors in the essay. Even a small error can take away your chance of being selected.

Once you have put your best effort in your college admission essay, leave it aside for a couple of days. Revisit it, when 2-3 days have passed and do a critical analysis of what you have written on the basis of above points. The outcome of this analysis will definitely improve your essay. We wish you the Best of Luck.
