English Monologue- The Crucible's John Proctor Speaks from His Jail Cell
It is a cold eerie night before I must be hanged for a terrible crime I did not even commit. I sit here in my bitter damp cell all because of the evil, falsehearted, cheating, lying, resentful and cold ice hearted girl Abigail Williams. She was so scheming and sly she would not stop at no matter what to get what she wanted. It all ended up failing in Abigail?s part; she is running away from this hardship that she has left with me. I was not going to let her ruin my life; she is not going to destroy my life! I despise those witch trials; it brought an awful disgrace upon my name. The only things I had left, will I ever get the chance to redeem myself and unblacken my name. I had the good life a wife and two children and was a well respected citizen. Until a teenage girl came into my life, I should have recognized and refused to go along with her seducing ways and stayed true to my wife.
That Abigail be damned condemned to hell. I was pathetic and gave into her good looks and charm. And now I am forever stuck with the dirt that can never be cleansed of the disloyalty and adultery. I wish I could reverse my actions and do things differently. The last time I saw Elizabeth was on the fields by the sea, she was the only person who did not judge me and convinced me not to confess to the so-called accusations against me. She stands by me no matter what the circumstances she is my soul mate. From the minute Abigail entered the courtroom she was messing with my mind, I was filled with so much rage. She was acting like she was possessed by demons; I called her a whore pleading guilty to adultery. Abigail has given me hell and ruined my life. I hate this part and all that?s left is for me to face my destiny.
