I intend to give back to the community by combining knowledge obtained from the study of Psychology with the leadership skills I have gained by working in a tutorial program into a wide scale program for underprivileged school children of my community.
I plan to seize this immense educational opportunity with intellectual curiosity and maintain a high grade point average as I have done throughout the four years of my high school education of numerous honor courses in order to attain the knowledge to implement an organization to provide a positive learning environment for young children with special emotional, educational and financial needs. Using the knowledge I earn from a college degree, I plan to create a positive learning environment for underprivileged school children who would not normally receive a quality education and aspire to assist these children in creating lifelong educational, organizational, and social skills to overcome the boundaries of their economic situation and lifestyle.



I believe that a psychology degree from State University will allow me to learn about the behavioral and growth patterns of young children while also teaching me quality methods to effectively reach these children and allow me to expand my educational knowledge in transformation of the streets of the community of Hattiesburg.



Teaching students necessary life skills in a positive learning environment, I hope to create mentors and provide substantial friendships for these young, impressionable students with art lessons and writing workshops to expand creative skills, physical fitness programs to promote healthy lifestyles, and mentoring sessions to maintain a beneficial state of mind and teach the students conflict resolution and similar psychological skills, which can be applied and used to maintain constructive relationships within their family and success within their schoolwork. Similar programs have been used in the ?Our Kids? after school program with widespread success rates, more than half of the students benefiting from these tutorial and mentoring sessions have raised their school grades by ten percentage points or more and the children who were once considered trouble makers by the administrators of their elementary schools in downtown Hattiesburg and by the opinions of their parents, have adopted positive new attitudes and their discipline problems are no longer apparent.



During the years of my elementary education as a young child, I encountered many emotional problems within my home life and my troubled economic status and family relationships were greatly reflected in my schoolwork in the form of extremely low grades and little compression of educational skills. After I was enrolled into a similar program, I slowly transformed into the successful high school student I am now and my grades dramatically increased and the young girl who was nearly illiterate at the age of 7 was soon reading at the level of a 15 year old according to state tests. The after school mentoring program gave me the hope I had once lost and helped me to create educational and social skills that I continuously use in my everyday life as a senior at Oak Grove High School with a 3.95 grade point average with enrollment in numerous advanced classes and leadership participation in various community organizations.



The financial aid generously donated by the Education Services Foundation will serve as a great motivation to achieve my educational and volunteer goals throughout my four years at the University of Southern Mississippi and the skills and knowledge I obtain from this organization will stimulate my pair of helping hands to outreach into the hearts of numerable young children throughout the city of Hattiesburg to create the new generation of successful esf scholarship recipients.
