Personal Development Plan
Personal Development Plan (pdp) is a specific plan for your future in short-term of six months or twelve months. It is necessary that you have objectives set up for yourself, and plans and actions to be taken in order to achieve those objectives. Following pdp is a good way to improve yourself, and to acquire skills and knowledge. Therefore, it is advisable to continue doing pdp one after another. Also, pdp includes your CV, so you can update it with new experiences or skills acquired.
Where am I now?
My performance on the degree so far has been fairly ok, although I could have done better. Most of the time, I have achieved second lower or second upper grades. It has been due to the fact that the course?s structure has allowed me a lot of time to prepare and plan my work. So with a little bit of effort, given that I do not take school?s grades as the most important factor, I could do with at least a pass, or better. On the other hand, I have been developing on various skills throughout the course. Wider reading, presentation and group-work are often required in all my classes.

Although having given a lot of time to finish my work, I still do it at last minute. It has often resulted in very ?so-so? quality of the work, which, in turn, constituted my average grades. It is a bad habit that I need to stop doing; otherwise I might find myself struggling or being told off frequently in the workplace.

Discussing with classmates and friends, in my opinion, is the good way to learn. Associating with other people would give you a psychological boost to think more and to generate more ideas. They would point out your mistakes and your idea?s limitation. That is what I will continue doing.

The thing I want to start doing is to plan my time up to graduation properly. As the final project is drawing nearer, it is necessary to have a plan with specific time frame. My final project is a link-up from the proposal I am doing right now, so it would be a 6 month worth of work before I submit my project. Therefore, managing time and arranging tasks are important in order to have a satisfied result in the end.
Where am I going?

I have a specific plan for my career after leaving education. I would take up the job as a human resource officer.

First of all, I am interested in interacting with people, and it would be a follow-up from my education, as I chose subjects along the human resources line.

Secondly, human resource is an important aspect of business; most of organizations nowadays view people as their most valuable resources. In fact, the part that intrigued me was the challenges derived from the changes in function and structure of HR department. HR is becoming a need for every aspects of day-to-day management, and job-seekers would find their jobs require more of generalists with more skills and competencies to perform multi-tasking (Larsen & Brewster 2003). Those are challenges as well as potential, on which you could learn and develop yourself.

Lastly, HR is also the area that fit my personality and skills, according to Prospect Planner online assessment (Prospect.co.uk). I had good matches, such as creative thinking, flexibility, logical thinking and etc, for job in HR area. There were some other professions that would suit me; however I chose to identify this one first, as I have been developing myself along the line of human resources. Nevertheless, there are still skills that would need improving like organizing or questioning and listening.

My research question:

Is there a correlative relationship between incentives and employee?s working performance?

Research objectives:

1. Identify the relationship between incentives and employee?s working performance.
2. Identify the differences in term of gender concerning incentives.
3. Identify the differences in term of job position concerning incentives.

Personal objectives for the next 12 months

There are 3 ?SMART? objectives I want to achieve for the next 12 months that will help me in my career. First of all, I want to continue learning Mandarin language. I have been trying to learn it for the past 6 months, however to get the hang of a language requires more time. Still, it is needed as Chinese speakers are expanding all over the world. I have to the luck to be living among Chinese speakers, so with effort and willingness I will be able to achieve this objective and to measure my progress. So I will learn Mandarin day by day, through talking to my friends. Also, I will take up a Chinese language course right after my graduation, which means June, 2009.

The second objective would be improving my English writing and reading skills. People would say I must be really bad at English to set up such objective. In my opinion, able to simply read and write English is not the main point, the importance is how you understand what you read thoroughly and explain what you think professionally in writing. That what it counts in workplace, so that would be a realistic idea for me. It is achievable through constant learning and reading. I have an English teacher as a girlfriend, so she will be the one who measure my progress. I will buy some books about writing skills, and read as much as I can. This is a basic day-to-day learning. I will go back to my hometown at the end of December, so the first thing to do would be taking up the ielts (International English Language Testing System) test, to see how good, or how bad, I am at English, especially writing and reading.

The third objective is to increasing my knowledge about finance and audit. You can see how important this aspect of business is through the financial crisis happening all over the world. I do not feel right when my knowledge of the subject is very limited. Although my future job would not be in financial or audit sector, it does not mean that I do not have to deal with finance or audit at all. I do not think it is too hard to understand fundamental concepts. I will talk to one of my best friends, who is currently working for Ernst &Young, to have the broad picture about finance and audit and to know which areas I should look at. This would be arranged once I arrived at home in December. I will also find some good books like Finance for Managers by Harvard Business School Press, guiding business manager how to increase their impact on financial planning.

Conclusion

Apparently, there are a lot of things that I can develop myself on. However, in the mean time, those are things that I planned for the coming graduation, which is the big turn in my life. In the workplace nowadays, constant learning and adapting is utmost important. Therefore, having a short-term specific plan for your career is a good way to push yourself up to scratch. And my plan here is obvious: doing good for my final project and preparing myself for the market next year.
