I bet you didn?t know that the first cars made were all mostly electric. But as time passed gas powered cars became more popular through the years. There were few if any electric cars available as timed moved on. Everyone believed that gas powered vehicles were more convenient than the electric powered ones. I believe that gas powered vehicles are better because gas powered cars have more function ability. The range that electric vehicles have is poor compared to gas vehicles. Electric vehicles don?t function very well when the weather is cold. You?ll need to charge your car pretty much every night. You are only going to be able to go 80 mph. If you go up a big hill your range goes down. electric vehicles (rather ev?s) do pollute but they don?t pollute the same way that gas cars pollute. The chief disadvantage of EV?s is that they usually can travel no more than 100 miles before their batteries must be charged (Harverdink, 1). While on the other side I only need to fill up the gas tank every 200 miles. Now, if you?ve ever been to Sitka, Alaska then of course you realize that from one end of the island to the next it is only about 14 miles, which is just the main road. There are all sorts of smaller roads that lead to more houses and stores. Being a teenager like myself, in a small town all that you can do is cruise around to kill some time. My boyfriend and I pretty much drive 100 miles in a day. Just from going back and forth and back and forth. Then we at least have one more day of doing that before we have to fill up the tank again. So for me, I think that it is better to have a gas car rather than electric. I think gas powered vehicles are better because they function better when the weather gets cold.
Cold weather hurts EV battery performance. When the outside heat falls below freezing, usable range drops to 20 miles or less making the EV practically unusable in cold weather climates (Peters, 3). We live in Alaska so the winters here are pretty much freezing or below so an EV here probably wouldn?t be good in the wintertime. Also in the cold weather it makes the charging time a lot longer than it would?ve been if it were warm out. Cold weather hurts the amount of time that you would need to charge your battery pack. For the average EV, it takes six to eight hours for a charge from zero to complete (faq, 1). This is another reason gas cars are better. You could be doing a lot more things in that amount of time rather than waiting for your car to charge. Most people will tell you that you could just charge your car over night while you are in bed. But what if an emergency happens during the middle of the night? What are you going to be doing if you car isn?t charged? For me I think that it would be nice to know that if an emergency comes up, that I?ll be able to just go out there and take care of it. I would like to not worry about if my car is fully charged. I think it would be better to just be able to get into a car and go. So I think, for me, it would be better to have a gas-powered car. In case you didn?t know, EV?s have a below average acceleration, a majority of them have a top speed of less than 80 mph (Harverdink, 1). Here in Sitka, Alaska you don?t really need to reach speeds of 80 mph. Also it would be nice to know that you?ll be able to go that fast. But if the top speed averages out to 80 mph will that decrease how fast you can accelerate. Now you don?t really need to go 80 mph when you?re here in Sitka but it sure would be nice to know that you would be able to go that fast. It would especially be a nice thing to have if you wanted to go on a road trip. Most EV?s are fully capable of quick acceleration, fast hill climbing and maintaining highway speeds. However, when you do any of these activities it will greatly reduce the effective range of a fully charged battery pack (Hackelman, 3). Well since we live on an island we don?t really have to worry about it getting up to highway speeds. The fastest you?ll ever need to go here in Sitka is 45 mph. Though we do have a lot of hills that we drive on. Which means that it might not be the best choice for me. Quick acceleration is sometimes necessary here in a small town. Someone might be chasing you because you supposedly were saying some bad things about that other person. Also you might have a boyfriend or girlfriend who likes to go fast and that they have the need for speed. But most of the time it?s not even going to be a big deal. Customers are understandably reluctant to buy a factory made electric vehicle for $35,000 (Katz and Payne, 46). I don?t know about you, but to me that is a lot of money. Most people would probably not want to buy a factory made EV, but if you really did want a EV then you could have a donor car, maybe a car that has it?s engine is thrashed, be converted into an electric powered car. There are two different ways of doing this. One was is to buy a conversion kit that fits with the car that you wish to convert. The other was is to have an expert convert it for you. If you choose to have someone do a conversion for you the price runs from $15,000 and up, depending on the kit used. When having someone else do the conversion the price is so high because the cost includes the batteries, donor car and components and labor (What is an Ev). I don?t know about you but you could pretty much buy a really nice used car for that same amount. I think that it is a little extreme just because it supposedly is better and easier to use than gas cars. If you need to replace the battery pack that is going to cost you around $1,000-1,200 and you?ll need to replace the battery every 3 years(What is an Ev). Again I think that it is pretty extreme just to replace the battery. These facts show that they indeed can pollute more than the gas powered vehicles. Electric vehicles would create more than 60 times the amount of lead pollution as comparable with a vehicle burning leaded gasoline. Lead is a more serious environmental threat than urban smog (Peters, 7). Here in Alaska pollution is not a big problem. And I want to keep it that way. I think that if our town is completely full of electrically powered vehicles that is when it could start to get out of control, pollution wise. There is no pollution here and hopefully we can keep it that way. When assuming that an EV is charged with 100% coal fired electricity, the study estimated that the EV would emit 150% more carbon dioxide, 250% more nitrogen oxides than internal combustion engines (Will Ev?s Really Reduce Pollution? p.2) Here in Alaska we don?t use coal fired electricity but if all we had were electric cars we would be polluting more because of the power we use is oil fired, and that is a big problem pollution wise. When we first started doing the research I thought that electric powered cars would pollute less because they are electric. Most people think that EV?s are better because it is a blessing of electric propulsion that there?s no motor vibration (Hackelman, 3). I tend to disagree with that point. If you can?t hear the motor then how are you going to be able to tell if there is something wrong with your car? Right now I can tell if there is something wrong with my car because it will make a noise that I?m not used to hearing. And since I?ve had this car for some time then I already know how to tell if something is wrong. With an EV you use a donor car possibly a car that you?ve never even seen before. And if you haven?t even seen it before how are you going to tell if it even works correctly? After doing all this research I believe that gas-powered vehicles are better. Not only because this is what I own right now, but also because I have first hand experience with gas-powered cars instead of electric ones. There are a lot more reasons to say why gas powered cars are better than electric. but my class only had about a week to do all the research. What we did was break into groups and divide up all the work. One group did all the research about cost. Another did the research on function. And pollution was another section done. Looks and reliability was the last section that we did. All the info that I choose to use in this paper was, function, cost and pollution. Those were the only sections that I thought were best for my statement. Gas cars are better than electric cars, for me anyways.
