Serving the Public and the Animals
From childhood, most of us have fond memories of going to the zoo. We were entertained by the variety of animals that we were not able to see on a regular basis. Visitors of a zoo get to see exotic, and local animals of that area. Going to a zoo gives children and adults a chance to learn about different animals. Certain zoos also promote the conservation of endangered species. To people of all ages, zoos are just plain fun. This essay will support the operation of zoos based on their entertainment and educational value, and their ability to save some species from extinction.
Most zoos, depending on the location, house animals from all over the world. Each zoo needs to be in a place where local animals, as well as exotic, can survive and live comfortably. That?s one of the main reasons why people go to zoos. Visitors are able to view unique animals through glass, and see how they might act in the wild. The Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona, features primates, big cats, birds, and reptiles. It also features large mammals like hippos, giraffes, and bears. They have recently built a new part of the zoo that houses panthers, sloths, and exotic birds. The Wildlife Zoo in Phoenix, Arizona takes care of hundreds of wild animals, with even more variety than the Reid Park Zoo. These zoos have special activities for children and adults that involve awareness and education of every species. There are also zoo employees who walk around with small animals and snakes that can be petted and held by zoo visitors.

Zoos are a popular place to bring students for a field trip. Besides the entertainment value, children can learn about the different animals of the world and see how each is special. In front of every animal enclosure there are signs or books containing information about that particular animal?s background, eating habits, and needs to survive. Every zoo holds activities for children to learn about animals. ?The Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona has several activities that change throughout the year. Desert Discovery Kids is a program designed to give children an interactive experience with the desert? (Programs). The zoo takes the time to do this so we know how to help in the conservation of these beautiful animals. They also do this in the hopes that spectators will change their view on the needs of wild animals. They hope to improve the treatment of the environment, which will in turn benefit the wild animals in their natural habitat.

Many people enjoy the zoo for the previous reasons mentioned, but some see a deeper meaning for them. The majority of zoos are here to serve for conservation of certain species. They take care of the animals while they observe and research which environments help the animals reproduce. They also make sure that the animals get proper nutrition. Some organizations do not agree with this. peta representatives say, ?Zoos claim to educate people and preserve species, but they frequently fall short on both counts. Most zoo enclosures are quite small, and labels provide little more information than the species? name, diet, and natural range. The animals? normal behavior is seldom discussed, much less observed, because their natural needs are seldom met? (Zoos: Pitiful Prisons). This idea is not correct based on recent decisions made.

In 2002, regulations were set that all zoos need to follow when conserving a species. ?Each zoo must; accommodate their animals under conditions which aim to satisfy the biological and conservation requirements of the individual species? (Conservation in Zoos). This means that they need to provide surroundings which aim to satisfy the behavioral needs of the different species, and maintain a high standard of animal husbandry with a developed program of preventive and curative veterinary care and nutrition. Zoos need to participate in research and exchange of information on the conservation of species, as in, reproduction in captivity, repopulation, and reintroduction of wild animals to their habitat. Employees of a zoo must promote public education and awareness in relation to the conservation of biodiversity, particularly by providing information about the species exhibited and their natural habitats. Escape of the animals must also be prevented. These and other common zoo policies keep the zoos enjoyable.

Zoos should grow around the world because there are several benefits for animals and their viewers. There are so many benefits from having zoos. They give many gifts to the viewers and the captive animals. They aid in conservation, education, and entertainment. Without zoos, humans would not know enough about animals to treat their diseases, or to help wild animals with injuries. Many people would go without knowledge of the world?s different animal species. Several species would have seen extinction already. Zoos are a highly valuable commodity that should not be terminated.
