Justifying the Killing of Animals for Research
Can killing animals for medical research, cosmetics, food and sport be justifiable? For what reason can they be killed or should they not be killed at all. Not killing animals at all would lead to overgrowth in population which could cause damage to the environment. Experimenting on animals for cosmetics is not needed because if there were no beauty products being sold then humans would like each other for the way they naturally are. Then comes using animals for sport. Torturing innocent animals for entertainment. What pleasure does anyone get from watching animals killing each other? I believe that using animals for food is the only reason for killing animals. Some people may argue that meat is not needed in a balanced diet and alternatives of vegetables, fruits, pulses and dairy produce can be consumed for protein instead, but we have canine teeth.
We are suited to eating meat like other carnivorous and omnivorous predators. Meat is also the best source of protein and iron which are used alot in the body. With vegetables, fruit, and dairy produce alot must be eaten to achieve the same amount of protein and iron consumed with a smaller amount of meat. Eating too much vegetables or anything becomes hazardous to the body therefore eating meat could prevent this problem and also leave more room in a diet for more food. Understanding this concept can help us to make use of our natural features and kill animals for justifiable reasons. OK, but what is meant by justifiable reasons? In Islam there are a very few justifiable reasons as animals are considered as the creation of Allah and so must be treated equally with all other living creatures created by Allah. Some justifiable reasons are; hunting for food and if there is no other course of action, testing on animals for medical purposes although it is not encouraged by most muslims. ?Whoever kills anything bigger than a sparrow without a just cause, Allah will hold him accountable for it. The listeners asked, ?O Messenger of Allah, what is a just cause?? He replied, "That he kill it to eat, not simply to chop off it?s head and then throw it away." ? (Hadith). Muslims show how caring they are to animals while slaughtering them. Muslims have a special way of slaughtering animals so that it is slaughtered in a Halal way making it as quick and painless as possible. They make sure that the knife is as sharp as possible so that the animal?s death is quick. The animal is to go to it?s death in a calm atmosphere, being fed and watered so that it is does not suspect it?s fate. A Hadith teaches about slaughtering animals in the right way: ?Ibn Abbas once reported that the Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) saw a man who was sharpening his knife after laying down a sheep to be slaughtered. He rebuked him saying, "Do you intend to make it die two deaths?" ?. There are many places in the Qur?an where it states ?And kill not a living creature which Allah has made sacrosanct, except for a justifiable reason? (Surah. 6 V.152 and Surah. 17 V.33). If the animal is used for sport (hunting, blood sports) it is not considered a justifiable reason and therefore it is completely forbidden (Haraam). A verse from a hadith states ?If someone kills a sparrow for sport, the sparrow will cry out on the Day of Judgement "O Lord! That person killed me for nothing! he did not kill me for any useful purpose!" ?. Muslims are made to follow examples set by the Prophet Muhammed(Peace Be Upon Him). An example is when a cat had given birth to kittens on the prophets cloak, the prophet did not get rid of them but instead cut round the cats leaving them with a generous part of his cloak as a blanket. Islam says that animals are living creatures, created by Allah and given to humans from Allah with everything else on the Earth to be looked after properly and in a way as harmless as possible. It is stated in the Qur?an ?It is he who has made you custodians(Khalifah) inheritors of the Earth?(Surah.6 V.165). In my opinion I also say that animals must be treated with respect and looked after properly just as we would treat ourselves. I believe that if we test an animal for cosmetic goods it is wrong as we must accept what God has given us and not try to alter our looks. Also for the use of entertainment, Animals must not be used. Basically I?m trying to say is we should only use animals for food and for anything else only unless there is no other alternatives at all.
