Positive and Negative Effects of Tourism

Positive and Negative Effects of Tourism
I have discovered that many locals heavily rely upon tourists to earn their livings and to afford to live in such an expensive area as Castleton, where a small cottage will cost about £100,000. Locals running services for tourists do inflate their prices therefore creating much profit, particularly in the summer months. This is not a problem for locals as their lives and livelihoods have certainly been protected by the attraction of the quaint village in the countryside which is appealing to many city dwellers, i will go into detail on these issues later in this section of my project. There is also a downside to this for the locals. The locals don?t have many services for themselves in the village, there are virtually no shops for locals. Also tourists cause many other problems such as traffic ? the roads are often congested, litter and noise. There are also some conflicts over land use. The locals do have some benefits from the tourist industry, such as good public transport links, but they wish for something to be done about the many problems in the village.
I am using the my primary data and some of my secondary data to do this part of the fieldwork. At the differant sites differant thing were observed about the litter, the noise, the buildings, the crime, the erosion, the traffic, the pollution, the vegetation, the wildlife and the amount of pedestrians in these areas. Point 1 Point 1 is situated near a bride leading into Castleton. It has an average amount of litter, a high noise level because of the river that runs by it and the fact that it is on a main road. It has no buildings in the area, there was also no visible crime in that area. There is no road and pavement erosion and neither were in need of re-surfacing. There was little traffic on the road, we think this is beacuse most of the traffic had already arrived in Castleton for the day. There is little vegetation because it was mainly a road and path. There was not much visible wildlife in this area but some birds were seen by the river. there were no pedestrians in the area. Point 2 Point 2 was situated near a traffic island in the centre of Castleton opposite the main car park entrance. It had a more than average amount of litter in the area and the noise level as quite loud because of it being situated near the main carpark. Their were many buildings in the area which mainly consisted of shops, pubs and cafes. There was no visible crime in the area and there was little erosion because it was the main road through Castleton. There was quite a large amount of traffic moving through the area because of the carparks it was nearby. The pollution in the area was quite low considering it was in the centre of the village. There was no visible wildlife and very little vegetation. There were a moderate amount of pedestrians in the area but it wasnt overcrowded. Point 3 Point 3 is situated in the market place of the village next to the village green. There was an average amount of litter in this area considering the village?s fish and chips shop is in the area. The noise level in the the area was quite quiet because it is away from the main roads in the village and only very small amounts of traffic passes through the area. There is very little pollution in the are because of the lack of traffic. There is a large tree and soime other smaller trees in the area but apart from the grass on the village green there is no other form of vegetation in the area. There were lots of pedestrians in the area because it had some shops and was on a footpath going through the village. Point 4 Point 4 is situated at the top of Pindale road on one of the smaller ways to exit Castleton from. There was no litter in the area that could be spotted without looking for it, bins are situated in this area. there is absolutly no noise, or crime in the area and the landscape consists of mainly fields and has no buildings. There is noticable erosion in this area because of it being a footpath and in almost constant use throghout the summer months and also less frequently in the winter. there is not traffic in the area because of it being a footpath but farming vehicles have access to the fiels surrounding the footpath. There is lots of vegetation because of the fields and small woods surrounding the footpath and the environment is clean from pollution with it being a long distance from the centre of the village. Lots of pedestrians pass through this area being of the simple reason that it is a footpath. Point 5 Point 5 is situated in the very centre of the roads and tourist shops in the the village. There was no litter in this section of the town because there are many bins situated in the area. The area is very noisy because of it being one of the main areas in the village and traffic has to pass this point to get to the car parks and the caves. The buildings in the area are generally clean and well-kept but there are some farm buildings opposite the entrance of Cross street. The Crime in the area is greater than at some of the other points because some of the windows in the barns were smashed slightly, this could of been because of the weather but could also of been caused by crime. There is no erosion in this part of the viullage because there is not vegetation and the roads have recently been resurfaced. There is lots of traffic in the area (see noiuse section above). The pollution in this area is higher than most other because it is on the main route through the village. We saw no wildlife in this area because of the noise and traffic. There were lots of pedestrians in this area because of the large amount of shops. Point 6 Point 6 is situated at the main car park in Castleton, just off the main road going through the village. There was quite a lot of litter in this area because of the many cars that continue to move in and out of the carpark, despite there being many bins in this area. this area was quite very noisy because of constant traffic moving in and out of the car park with visitors coming and going all the time. There are no buildings in the area but a new tourist information centre is being built ajecent to the car park to replace the old one which was to small and old to cope with increasing tourism in the area. The toilets at this seem to be the only place where any crime has taken place, small bits of graffiti are seen inside and outside of them. There is little erosion in this area but the walls around the car park have been taken apart and many stones have been taken home to peoples houses as reminders of Castleton. There is lots of traffic diue to the fact the area is a car park. There is little vegetation in the carpark itself but outsaide what used to be the walls there are trees and fields in sight. There is obvious pollution caused by the almost constant traffic in the area. There are birds seen in the trees but not much else because of the large amounts of traffic. Lots of pedestrians are in the area because of the public toilets and coming to and from their cars and coaches. Point 7 Point 7 is situated in between the point 3 and point 4 in the southern edge of the village, it is also near the entrance to a cave. There was quite a large amount of litter and noise in the area because it is the only route to one of the caves in the village area. There was only the buildings to do with the caves in this area but these were is average condition. There is little obvious crime in the area. There is almost no erosion because the footpaths leading up to the caves are well maintained and quite new. No traffic in the area because of it being a footpath only to the caves (except for staff parking). No pollution in the area because of the lack of cars etc. There was qute a lot of vegetation in tharea because of the surrounding hill and woodland. There was visible wildlife because the area was quiet and unspoilt. Quite a few pedestrians were in the area because of the caves but it was a road only for use with the caves so not many other people would need to go there. Point 8 Point 8 is situated in the aptly titled ?Devil?s arse car park?. This car park is a public car park but is also used as overflow parking for when the main car park is full. There was an average amount of litter for the village in the car park. There was very little noise because the car park was quite empty and not many cars passed through the area. There were no buildings in the actual area but nearby were some well-kept houses of the village. No visible crime in the area. There was a lot of erosion in the car park from general use and it looked as though it hadnt been resurfaced for quite a while. A very small amount of pollution in the area because of it being a car park. There was vegetation in the area and this made the car park look pleasent (for a car park that is!). There was no visible wildlife but we did see some nests in the trees in the area. Very few pedestrians were in the area and the ones that passed were on their way to the caves or the shops just around the corner, over a small bridge. Point 9 Point 9 is situated at the Speedwell cavern car park on Winnats pass, just outside of the village area. There was very little litter in this area beacause it is used as a carpark and many people simply walk from the village itself there, so the car park was quite empty when compared to the others in Castleton. There was little noise except for the passing traffic seen occasionally. The buildings that were in the area are in good condition and are well kept. There is no obvious crime and little erosion in the area. There is very little pollution except for that coming from the passing traffic. There is plentiful vegetation in the area with lots of trees and large open fields in view. Wildlife could be seen in this area as well. Few pedestrians were seen here except for those coming to and from their cars and passing walkers. Point 10 Point 10 is situated at the Mam tor ar park on the A6187 joining to the B6061 which leads to Castleton. There was quite a lot of litter in this area because of an obvious lack of bins. The only noise in the area was the cars passing by the car park whcih were quite frequent and noisy on the roads surface. There were no visible buildings in this area. There was no crime to be seen in this area. There was erosion on the paths leading fron the car park to the main footpaths and it was quite difficult to walk in some areas. There was no signs of pollution in the area except for the pollution caused by the car park. The are huge amounts of vegetation in this area including trees, bushes and grassy areas. Wildlife couyld be seen in this area. There were little signs of pedestrians in this area apart from the ones leaving and entering their cars and the walkers using the footpaths.
