Exploring the Trailer of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings
Purpose: Film trailers are made to introduce the film, and make the audience want to see the film. They receive money from this, by advertising the film. Trailers are there to try and entice the audience into wanting to watch the whole film. Trailers give information like; title of the film, genre, basic storyline, actors and usually, favourite parts of the film that are exciting. Trailers or film information are usually found in many different places, such as; television, radio, newspapers, internet, at cinemas before other films and even on flyers or posters placed around. Genre [image]You can tell that this film is based with many different genres, these are; fantasy, action and adventure. You can tell this at many places in the trailer, as it shows many different creatures or monsters, these being all mythological such as an orcs, ogres and devils. Furthermore, you can work out that this is also an adventure and action film because of their travels to many different places, and action, because of the battles and fights that take part in the trailer.
From this type of film, you can expect to see lots of battles or wars raging on, but also a good fantasy and adventure storyline, where weird but wonderful things take place and mythological creatures may appear.[image] Audience This film is aged at all ages, apart from the very young, as it has creatures in that could be frightening. It would appeal maybe more to people who really enjoy fantasy, adventure or action films, as there are large battles that take place, which they can see extremely enjoyable. It also appeals to both genders and people of many different ages. This film appeals to a range of people. This is because of the many genres the trailer and film contains, and the varied characters and creatures. Finally, it has actors of different ages and personality, this entices different people to come out and view the film. Events & Characters [image] There are many events show in the trailer; many of them being highlights of the film. In the trailer?s events, you can tell that they are the main highlights, this is because they are loud in sound, exciting, it seems fast paced and it is usually a close-up or close medium shot of someone or something. After these events, the audience will want to see more fast paced and exciting battles like the trailers, and furthermore, the audience will want to see the whole film, as the trailer is just part of it. In the trailer, quite a few characters are shown, but few are shown many times. The ones shown multiple times are the main characters. They show the main characters from the film many times in the trailer, so that the audience gets to know a brief description and ideas about them. We know these are the main characters because as well as showing them in the trailer numerous times, it gives close-up camera shots of them, as this shows the audience that these people will be in the film and play a large part in it. In the film, the audience will expect to see more of what the characters are like, and see the characters bigger, and get more details about them. Visual Effects In the trailer, the lighting used is quite dark and sometime not so easy to see in places. This makes the audience look harder and concentrate more on the trailer. But, other parts are in brighter light, which draws attention to the trailer. The sets used differ at different points in the trailer, it depends on the action. It could be a fast paced scene or more slow paced. The scene may be situated in the open country grassland or in the depths of a tunnel with dark buildings/walls. There are a large variety of shots used in the trailers; close-ups, wide shot, long shot and many others. They use wide and long shots to show lots of characters at once and to show a large amount of background or scene. They use close-ups on the main characters to show the audience that they are the main characters, and will get interested in them. Close-ups give the effect of important to the audience. Sound Effects There is some music in the very background of the trailer, which is quite fast paced which goes with the speed of the trailer to give good effect. The music is always there in the background. This is to give its effect and it works well. In this trailer, a voiceover is used. It is a male voice and he is probably middle aged. This voice was chosen as it is a good base voice which gives a remembrance in your head. It is also to show that older people can go see the film as well. There are many sound effects used in parts of the trailer at the same time as some exciting events happen, which give effect to what has happened. An example is; when Legolas shoots his arrow, there is a sfx which makes it seem more exciting and interesting. It is like a whoosh sound. The sounds differ throughout the trailer, whereas the background music is fairly quite; but effective, the sfx can be loud to emphasise someone or something. The voiceovers volume is quite loud but steady, which makes sure that the audience can hear what main information or ideas he gives, and it seems to stick in the viewers mind. You can also hear the characters speak at points in the trailers; it is mainly the main characters talking, as it tells the audience that these people are the main characters. There are a few parts of silence of background music and speech, and there are just the sfx and the trailer. This makes the sound effects seem loud and draws the audience in, maybe making them oblivious that this is an important part. Conclusion I think that this film is effective for its genres, and it gives sections of all adventure, action and fantasy, using sound and visual effects, and main events and highlights. This trailer would make the audience very interested in seeing the film as it is very exciting and gives many different aspects of the film. They do this in many different ways, including the important camera shots. I greatly enjoy this trailer because as well as I enjoy adventure and fantasy films, it makes every part of the trailer interesting and fun or exciting to watch. [image]Finally, it is important for its main cause. It draws the audience in, making them want to go and watch the actual film. I think that one of the main ways it does this is the way the visual effects are used, and hopefully more of them would be used in the film.
