Evaluating the Ways in Which Emotion Might Enhance and/or Undermine Reasoning as a Way of Knowledge
What is emotion? Something inside of you, how you feel, a gut feeling you cannot controle, an insticntive feeling from the heart, something that affects the way you learn. Emotion affects everyone in different always and affects the way we live. Many people are affected stronger by their emotion than others. If we had no emotion then we would not care about anything such as, newspaper articles. They are printed out to affect people by their emotion. ?desert wives lead lives of agony? this article title affects us because of the emotion that we have in side and if we had no emotion then we would not care. Another example of our emotion affecting our life and decisions is the green house effect, many people I the world have changed their life style such as not using their car as much, which lets out the exhaust fumes because of the emotion being triggered by news on the green house effect. Reasoning is a way of good judgement of which is sometimes triggered of by emotion. One may become emotional about something that could affect the way ones reasoning works. Such as someone may want to by a pair of shoes of which cost a high amount and because their emotion is set off their reasoning is ignored because their emotion for the shoes is much stronger the their reasoning. If they were to listen to their reasoning, they would not buy the shoes but if their emotion is stronger, they do buy the shoes How does emotion and reasoning affect all of the topics of which we have studied in negative and positive ways?
Such as maths. Maths may be affected by reasoning such as most answers are reasonable. Most answers come out to be reasonable as you have proof of which no sort of way of knowing can be stronger than. Reasoning in maths is a positive way of knowing as it helps us understand it better. However, emotion does not come up in maths because all of maths can be proved. Emotion is not needed though in maths. Natural sciences is affected by emotion and reasoning in several ways. In natural science, there is an example of where emotion is stronger than reasoning. Sceptic James Randi was so convinced that homeopathy does not work and so he offered $1m for any scientist to prove it. Offering $1m is slight extreme but because he was so emotional about him being right that his emotion was stronger than his reasoning, and again if his reasoning had been stronger he would not have offered so much money. In science, there is no certainty so it is more likely for emotion to take over this subject because you have to take chances to prove things correct. If reasoning would be stronger in science then they would need strong evidence for things to be true towards the beginning. Plato defined knowledge as justified true belief which understand as facts and values of which is possible in this subject. Emotion is worse for this subject because it does not help you to achieve the correct answer where as judgement does and allows you to give a justified true belief. Human science. When looking at just children we can say that emotion has an impact on there life depending on where they come from. Margaret mead did a study of adolescence in Samoa. ?children are passed from the care of one person to another and so do not develop violent feelings, they have ´no emotional allegiance to father and mother?, from her study we can se how in Samoa children are not affected in their life emotionally where as nearly the rest of the world has an emotional feeling towards their family which obviously affects the rest of their life as they are easily influenced by their family. In this case, with when looking at the children from Samoa one may see how reasoning is used to influence their family life as they do not have to relate it to their emotion they have in their Samoan life style. When looking at art briefly, one is able to see that emotion and reasoning is what helps to make art what it is. No one is able to see what art is however, one may have there own opinion. This own opinion comes from your reasoning and your emotion. Someone may possible think art is a requirement of skill where the judgement or reasoning comes in telling us how much effort went into it, for example, a painting or how hard really is it to do what the artist has done. Where as art can affect you emotion, because you may possibly feel as though you may like the piece of art. One may become attracted to the piece of art, which is caused by your emotion. When looking at art one person may have more of a judgemental view or an emotional view giving everyone a different reason to like a certain piece of work. There is another way of looking at which is does art influence our way of working such as, does it cause us to be emotional about it or do we become about emotional about it on our own, and the same for reasonable about it. Therefore, there is not a collective answer to what is art as emotion and reasoning are used in it at equal amounts. So I believe for reasoning and emotion work in a positive way in this subject. Emotion might enhance and/or undermine reasoning as a way of knowledge because in most cases emotion is what causes you judgement depending on your culture and the subject areas you look at. As you can see depending on what area you look at it seems as though either emotion or reasoning has a larger influence. Such as subject such as science are there to establish facts where as art is harder to justify value judgements with the same amount of certainty you have in science. In my opinion emotion is what affects our judgements in certain cases such as when looking at something for a first time.
