Critical thinking can be defined in a numerous ways, but all the definitions agree that critical thinking is definitely thinking about thinking. Webster?s dictionary defines it as the mental process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information to reach an answer or conclusion. It is important to understand critical thinking as well as be able to think critically when managing a business. Being able to think critically in an effective manner will consequently help you run your business more efficiently. Being able to think about things critically is important, however, to do so you must be willing to work at it. What I mean is that your brain has set up barriers to protect your ego by not letting you think about things that will challenge your ego. This is called enculturation, your ability to think about ideas that challenge your basic values and preferences will determine just how enculturated you are. For example, I grew up in Texas and went to Christian church, as do most people from this area. So people in this area for the most part believe in the bible and Christian beliefs, therefore, when these people?s beliefs are challenged by scientific research or archeological findings they find a way to rationalize the situation or reject it completely. Some people are so sure of the correctness of their ideas that they see no reason to test them against the intellect of others, and these people are called logical egoists. (Kirby 2007) So as you can see you must be willing to consider ideas that might challenge you current beliefs, however, the ability to be objective is the key to thinking critically.
Allowing these personal barriers to effect the decisions that you make can be costly when you are managing your business. There was a manager I recently worked with that let his personal barriers affect his decisions when we were choosing an employee to promote to supervisor. After discussing the pros and cons for the employees that applied for the position it was decided among the managers that we would promote a certain employee citing a number of legitimate reasons. However, one manager adamantly disagreed with the consciences of the rest of the management team, giving reasons that were not biased on job related issues. He let his cultural differences give him just reason to disagree with the other managers thus, allowing his enculturation prohibit him from evaluating the situation more clearly. Being able to take on ideas with a more open mind will allow you to entertain a larger variety of possibilities for alternate out comes when dealing with a problem. For instance, in the past at my work the managers made decisions that involved day to day operations that they did not have much involvement in and were not adequately informed about, thus causing production problems. So when discussing ideas on how to fix this problem I suggested that we maybe spend more time performing these operations to understand were the break down is and also take suggestions from the employees that work in that area. This gave us a greater knowledge of operations in that area and it added more ideas to our previous ideas making it easier and more effective to come up with a solution.
Critical thinking has been call the art of thinking about thinking, an idea that is sometimes too big to understand, however, has brought about some of the best changes in the history of man. Thinking critically is a skill that is very important to cultivate but as you can see it is not always the easiest of tasks. Not allowing personal barriers to put blinders on you ability to indulge in thoughts that might be foreign to you current way of thinking is a must when tiring to be a critical thinker. Critical thinkers have been key players in the evolvement of the human race as well as the thriving businesses of today.
