Essay Format – The Standard Rules for Writing an Essay

Essay writing, a way to express oneself, comes in all forms and sizes. One may want to write in the format of a critical analysis, or maybe an analytical essay, a narrative essay, a discussion essay or he may be in a mood to write a simple personal essay. Whatever the type of essay one is writing there are certain essay formats that one will have to follow. The very basic rules are simple to follow and these are:
1. A standard white paper measuring 8.5 inch x 11 inch will have to used and the essay should be computer generated unless otherwise clearly specified.
2. There should be a margin of one inch all around the written article and only one side of the page is to be utilised.
3. There should be a title page(if instructed by the professor) containing the entire title of the project in title case, name of the student, course name , name of instructor, date of submission and any other details the professor asks for.
4.There should be a header on all pages of the written essay containing written matter as according to the chosen format or as specified by the instructor.
7. A reference page should be at the end to refer any direct quotations cited in the essay to avoid charges of plagiarism.
8.Besides these one should be well versed with the MLA/APA/Chicago and Harvard format of writing as the written essay will follow either one of these formats.
9. All essays are generally written in the five paragraph format. It will have an introduction, a body consisting of generally three paragraphs or more (in odd numbers like 5 or 7 or paragraphs) and a conclusion at the end.
Academic essay writing can be the in the form of term paper writing, research paper writing or simple essay writing for a school assignment. In all the cases the above mentioned essays formats are standard and followed as a general rule. Besides the format one also needs to be thorough with the all the different types of formatting like the MLA / APA etc.
