Opinion Essay – A Guide To Write An Effective One
To write an opinion essay is perhaps one of the easiest thing to do amidst all the other formal essay types. Here the writer’s opinion and point of view matter the most on a given topic or a particular subject. Personal views supported by reasons and evidences are to be presented in such a manner that it gives an insight into the mind and thinking capabilities of the author. Opposing viewpoints must also be presented and by means of proper arguments shown that they are unconvincing. So it has no data or figures to be interpreted as in a technical essay nor any data to be analyzed as in an analytical essay. It has some aspects of the persuasive essay but though based on personal likings has no similarity to that of a personal essay.
Opinion essay like any other essay type follow the standard essay format and it is also made up of an introduction, a main body and a conclusion. The introduction will consist of the topic and the opinion of the writer very clearly stated. The main body generally consisting of three or more paragraphs will have the opinion or view point discussed in greater detail and supported by evidences and reasons. Opposite viewpoints are to be proven unconvincing here in the main body with the help of suitable arguments. The conclusion will give a summary of the main points discussed in the essay and will re state the writer’s viewpoint preferably in different words.
Before starting to write an opinion essay it always good to decide on the object on which to give an opinion about. The object or topic could be anything the writer feels strongly about and has good knowledge on. It could be any hobby, like some form of sports, or maybe gardening, or collecting coins or stamps ,anything the writer is keen on . After fixing a topic then the writer will have to list down his viewpoints or opinions on the subject and also look for and find reasons that support his viewpoints. Also arguments to counter the opposing viewpoints are to be prepared. Once the groundwork is done the writer can then set about to write the essay. The essay will have to be written in a formal style and preferably addressed directly to the reader. It is best to start the essay with an anecdote or a quote, a scenario or may be even a thought inspiring rhetorical question after which the topic is to be introduced and clearly stated. The main body should have well developed and well connected paragraphs with proper linking words joining the sentences and paragraphs. In the main body reference can be made to some interesting or unusual happening or event. No short form or emotive phrases are to be used while writing this essay and personal examples are best to start, while facts and data without proper referencing and citations are an absolute no-no.
