Do you believe that one’s personal style reflects their beliefs or values? Is your personal style reflected by pop culture? What about the media? Just think about first impressions. It is programmed in most of society’s brains to judge off the bat with first impressions form the basis of someone’s judgment. Some people do get obsessed over their looks which leads to mental problems such as Body Dysmorhic Disorder (BDD). A majority of society is guilty by deciding whether or not if they like the person or not. How you dress does reflect your personal beliefs and values but in my opinion media isn’t fully responsible for the way we think about ourselves, yes it does take some part but we are also pressured by peers and sometimes even ourselves. You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. It’s just logic. The first impression gives you a picture of things that may or may not be true.
I personally would have to say that the generation we were born into today is obsessed with pop culture. Personal style reflects both our beliefs and values. Our beliefs and values are undeniably influenced by pop culture and the media. Pop culture is definitely how someone portrays themselves. It innovatively shapes who they are and how they perceive the world.
The real questions are which part of pop culture shaped you? Everyone has their own sense of style. My style happens to be conservative. I don’t dress skanky, I dress with modesty because the forces of how I was raised as a child. I grew up in a great environment where I wasn’t forced to wear anything I didn’t want to, conservative family so therefore not much slid through with my parents. I couldn’t go out of the house showing cleavage, and definitely no short shirts or skirts. The television shows, music, and stores that my parents allowed me to shop in shaped me as a person and that is what I’m initially used to.
Most likely, people are going to dress to match their personality. Someone isn’t going to go out of the house wearing something that they don’t like. Obviously if someone’s life has changed, most likely their wardrobe will change. For example, if someone is busy and on the go, they’re probably going to be wearing something simple to throw on; jeans and a t-shirt is easy. A matured business woman would be wearing something professional and sophisticated. A business woman may also wear the designer brands because they make more money. On other terms, a formal person isn’t going to be walking down the street in ripped jeans and a tacky shirt. A person who is interested in rock music may wear the “edgier” looks and a studded belt. This all comes back to the “first impression” and how your personal style reflects who you are.
Why identify and establish values through personal style? Your personal style reflects your behavior, decision making, contribution and personal interaction with others. One should choose values that are most important and define your character. Living your values is what helps you be the person you are and also helps accomplish goals. Values impact every aspect of life. Personal belief portrays confidence and knowledge; it makes you successful.
All in all, the way you pursue yourself is a reflection of who you are and what you believe in. First impressions are it. The way you carry yourself personally is a reflection on who you are and what your represent yourself as. Pop culture has an enormous amount on lives daily and shapes the person you are and how you perceive the world.
