MLA Research Paper Format – Know the Format Well
There are four main different types of formatting that are required by the writer of a research paper depending on his subject and professor’s instructions. These are the APA format, MLA format, Chicago format and the Harvard format. Of these the APA and the MLA are the more popular types. APA format is followed generally by the science or business students and the MLA format is followed by the students of arts/ humanities and social science branch. MLA format of essay writing published by the Modern Language Association of America, is a style of writing followed in the United States, Canada, and other countries. MLA research paper format is the easiest of all the essay formats and It is very simple to follow and the pattern uncomplicated.
A MLA research paper format generally does not have any title page but it is best that for this one should seek the instructor’s guidance. In research paper writing or for that matter for any sort of academic essay writing it is very important to follow the professor’s guidelines or it may result in low grades. There are certain set standard pattern common for all types of research paper which must be followed religiously by all writers. These rules are:
1.the essay must be written on a standard white 8.5 by 11 inch paper and computer generated unless specified otherwise.
2.the entire essay will have a margin of 1 inch on all four sides.
3.A header will have the last name of the writer along with page numbers written at the upper right hand corner of the page.
4.the text has to be double spaced with the font being Times New Roman and the font size 12 points.
5.The first line of a paragraph will be indented one half inch ( five spaces or press the tab button once) from the left margin.
6.End notes if any to be listed on a separate page before the citation or reference page.
The whole thesis paper will consist of a title page(if required), a research paper abstract (containing the whole summary of the paper in no more than 120-200 words), a research paper introduction, a main body and a conclusion. For in-text citation in case of direct quotations, after the closed quotation mark the name of the author along with the page number has to be written inside a parenthesis. For example, “the fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars”. (Shakespeare, page 32). Without the available name of the author the title of the work cited can be used instead of the author’s name along with page number. The last page will be the reference page or the citation page which will have to be written as follows:
In case of book reference – Surname of the author followed by the first name. Name of the book. Place of publication. Name of the publishing company. Date of publishing
In case of journal reference – Author. Name of the article. Name of the journal. Date of publishing. Pages
In case of net reference – site name. Date of publishing. Name of the affiliated university or organization. Date of when you visited the site.
Thus writing in a MLA research paper format is not much of a difficult job and can be easily done once the format is clearly understood.
