Participate in the National Peace Essay Contest and Win a Scholarship
National Peace Essay Contest held every year by The United States Institute of Peace is one of the essay contests for high school students. The contest aims at promoting awareness and a serious discussion among the high school students and teachers about international peace and conflict resolution. Students attending high schools in USA are eligible to participate in the contest. More than 1,000 students take part in this national contest every year while thousands more engage in exercises of writing, research and discussions on peace related topics in connection with the contest.
Benefits to the Participants
National Winners and the state winners are awarded college scholarship awards ranging from $1000 to $10,000.

In addition to the prize money awarded to the national winners and state winners in the National Peace Essay Contest, they are invited for the five day awards program held in Washington. Expenses related to the program, including travel, lodging, meals, and entertainment are paid by the Institute. Participants to the award program get the opportunity to participate in various activities enhancing there awareness on peace processes, meetings with U.S. and foreign government officials and political leaders. They will visit historical and cultural sites, attend a musical or a play and try out meals at Washington’s most interesting international ethnic restaurants.
The Assigned Topic for the Essay
The participants in the National Peace Essay Contest have to write and submit a scholarship essay of not more than 1500 words on the given topic, answering a given question. Each year a new topic is announced. This year’s topic is “Governance, corruption, and conflict”. Question is “For those who hope to prevent violent conflict, how can their efforts to reduce, if not eliminate, corruption best contribute to building sustainable peace using two cases of countries in transition from war to peace?”
How to Participate in the Contest
High school students in grades nine through twelve are eligible to apply for the National Peace Essay Contest. If you are eligible you must have a sponsor and contest coordinator within the school or the community. The students can select their coordinator who can be an adult-teacher, parent or a youth leader. Coordinator shall certify the eligibility and that the essays are written by the student, review the essay requirements and check for grammatical and typographical errors and ensure that the essay is written as per the guidelines.
How to Write Your Essay
The guidelines for writing the essay are provided in Essay Requirements and Essay Requirement Checklist. Sample essays and winning essays from the past years are also provided by The United States Institute of Peace. The essay should not be more than 1500 words. Participants have to form their thesis on the topic as an answer to the question. The essay must be a three part paper with Introduction, Body and Conclusion. The sources of information and ideas must be given credit using a writing style such as APA, MLA and Chicago. A bibliography or a list of references must be given.
