Personal Response Essays: Share Your Feelings

Personal Response Essays: Share Your FeelingsA personal response essay, which is also called a reaction essay, is one of those papers where you do not have to argue for or against anything, do not have to prove your position.
The gist of personal response papers can be easily guessed from this word “personal”. You are supposed to share your feelings, impressions, ideas on something read.
If you are not experienced in writing personal response essays, the following guidelines will definitely be useful.
Before writing the personal response essay
We have already mentioned that your personal response essay should be based on something you have read. During the reading session, you have to make notes, jot down some ideas of yours, which will be the backbone of your personal response essay.
Answers to the following questions will also help you complete the essay:
What are your first impressions from the reading?
How do you feel about it?
Do you agree or disagree with the author, his/her position?
Is what you are reading about somehow close to you?
Writing the personal response essay
Personal response essays should be organized following a typical pattern. To be specific, they have an introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Your introductory paragraph should include the following information:
A title of the work read, its author’s name, publication date;
A couple of sentences, where you briefly summarize what you have read;
A thesis statement, which presents your reaction to the reading (agreement, disagreement, etc.).
As always, body paragraphs of the personal response essay should refer to your thesis and support it. As supporting evidences, you can use quotes, examples, some descriptions and details, etc.
Before you get down to work, find several sample response essays to make everything clear.
