More than 500 centers have been established across the globe to conduct the test, which is prepared by international writers through constant research. Students who wish to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate courses have to demonstrate ability to comprehend and use English while trying to solve simple as well as complex questions. It consists of four modules. All the modules including listening, reading, speaking, and writing are mandatory. Students have the choice to opt for the Academic IELTS test or the General Training IELTS test. The reading and writing tests would differ slightly depending on what students opt for.
The listening test is conducted first, which extends to a total of 30 minutes. Students listen to voice recording through a playback device which leads them through four sections. They listen to questions in each section and answer them. The last 10 minutes can be utilized to transfer answers to an answer sheet. Different accents are used to test the students. The playback device would play just once, either a dialogue or monologue.
The reading test has to be completed within 60 minutes. Students have to note down the answers to 40 questions in an answer sheet. They are allowed to take notes in the question paper, and Academic IELTS and General Training IELTS candidates have different reading tests.
Students have to write either an Academic IELTS essay or a General Training essay test based on their study program. They have to complete two English essay tasks in different writing styles. Candidates need to have a sound essay writing background. Two tasks of 150 words and 250 words have to be written.
The speaking test takes place either on the same day or can be conducted seven days before or after the other three tests. A specially trained and certified examiner would have a one-on-one interactive conversation with the candidate. The test lasts between 11 – 14 minutes and is divided into three parts. The first consists of questions about the candidate and his family. Candidates answer questions about a topic in the second test. They are then involved in a longer discussion on the topic in the third and final part.
