Commentary on Old Major's Speech

Commentary on Old Major's Speech
Old Major?s speech was directed to the animals. It was about over throwing the man and the animals should take over. It was all a rebellion. In this short essay I will describe the persuasive techniques used by Old Major to persuade his fellow animals to follow his dreams. I will include quotes and other important features used by Orwell. The main part of his speech is on his dream. Old Major the ?Middle White Boar? chooses the place and the time to make his speech very carefully. From this we can infer that he has taken his time to analyse successful techniques employed by other famous speakers from the past. In addition Old Major has a title and that is he was a prize to Mr. Jones. Also his appearance was revealing. He had a benevolent appearance and his tushes where never cut. Orwell describes how well Old Major had positioned himself on ?a sort of raised platform.?

Pizza Hut Marketing

Pizza Hut Marketing
The role of marketing within Pizza Hut is to ensure that the needs of customers are met and that the business makes money! The first task is therefore to understand our consumers. Pizza Hut has a broad range of customers. This is because pizza is extremely popular with a wide variety of people. In order to satisfy the needs of our customers, marketing is also involved in New Product Development. There are several steps to go through before we launch a new product. The first step is to carry out research to find out: ? What people think about pizzas (what role do they play in people?s lives, when do they eat them and so on) ? What do they like about pizzas ? What do they dislike about pizzas ? What do they want from pizzas This information is collected together and used to create ideas for prototypes. The ideas are tested first, before we make any pizzas. Once we have perfected the pizza, we launch! Kids Promotions At Pizza Hut we want to add value for families with kids aged between 4-10. We have a kid?s menu with toys or games, which changes every 6 weeks to keep our frequent visitors entertained. Pizza Hut has also linked up successfully with animated films such as Chicken Run, The Grenache and Shrek which have proved a hit for all the family. Operations The Pizza Hut restaurant operation is the face of the company.

The Trend in Chemical Properties of the Alkaline Earth Metals

The Trend in Chemical Properties of the Alkaline Earth Metals
Chemical Properties of the Alkaline Earth Metals The properties of the alkaline earth metals that we have discussed so far have all been physical properties. However an interesting aspect of periodicity is that chemical properties also show distinct trends, both down groups and across periods. To illustrate this, we will look at the reactions of the individual alkaline earth metals with water and consider trends down the group. The reaction of the alkaline earth metals with water. The table below shows the reaction of the various group 2 metals with water. In most cases the reactions produce hydrogen gas with subsequent production of an alkali. The nature of the alkali produced varies down the group. Element Observation Balanced equation Beryllium Does not react with water or steam Magnesium Reacts slowly with water to produce magnesium hydroxide ? a sparingly soluble weak alkali Mg(s) + 2H2O(l) è Mg(OH)2(s) + h2 The reaction can be speeded up by using steam Calcium Reacts steadily with water to produce a slightly soluble alkali - Calcium hydroxide. Ca(s) + 2H2O(l) è Ca(OH)2(aq) + h2+ The solution produced is known as lime water. Strontium Strontium reacts quickly with water to produce a water soluble alkali Sr(s) + 2H2O(l) è Sr(OH)2(aq) + h2 Barium Barium reacts rapidly with water to produce a soluble strong alkali. Ba(s) + 2H2O(l) è Ba(OH)2(aq) + h2 Notice, from the table, that ? the speed of reaction increases down the group ? the solubility of the alkali produced increases down the group. (The actual variation is shown as a graph below). [image] Why does the solubility of the hydroxides produced increase down the group? All of the group 2 elements will produce 2+ ions (as they all have two electrons in their outer shells that they can lose easily). [image] However the smaller metal ions (for example beryllium, Be2+ and magnesium Mg2+) have high charge densities since the 2+ charge is spread over a small area. This high charge density means that the small ions are able to strongly attract the hydroxide ions, OH- , and hold them in a strong lattice structure which water molecules find very difficult to break down.

Abu Abdullah Mohammad Ibn Musa al-Khawarizmi

Abu Abdullah Mohammad Ibn Musa al-Khawarizmi
Abu Abdullah Mohammad Ibn Musa al-Khawarizmi was born at Khawarizm (Kheva), south of Aral sea. Very little is known about his early life, except for the fact that his parents had migrated to a place south of Baghdad. The exact dates of his birth and death are also not known, but it is established that he flourished under Al- Mamun at Baghdad through 813-833 and probably died around 840 C.E. Khawarizmi was a mathematician, astronomer and geographer. He was perhaps one of the greatest mathematicians who ever lived, as, in fact, he was the founder of several branches and basic concepts of mathematics. In the words of Phillip Hitti, he influenced mathematical thought to a greater extent than any other medieval writer

Epidemiology

Epidemiology
Epidemiology is the study of the demographics of disease processes, including the study of epidemics and other diseases that are common enough to allow statistical tools to be applied. It is an important supporting branch of medicine, helping to find the causes of diseases and ways of prevention. It can, using statistical methods such as large-scale population studies, prove or disprove treatment hypotheses. Another major use of epidemiology is to identify risk factors for diseases. Epidemiological studies generally focus on large groups of people and relate to a target population that can be identified. This allows statistics to be used to recognize trends and possible causal factors. The three major epidemiologic techniques are descriptive, analytic, and experimental. While all three can be used in the investigation of disease occurrence, the method used most is descriptive epidemiology.

My Most Important Personal and Professional Accomplishments

My Most Important Personal and Professional Accomplishments
With no money, no direction, and no goals, I graduated from high school in 1987 not knowing if I would ever be a man, if I would ever know what life means. Unable to afford college tuition, I worked odd jobs for a few months before deciding to join the United States Marine Corps. A scrappy kid who needed structure and support, I entered the Marines unprepared for the next thirteen weeks of extraordinary physical and mental challenges.

English Literature

English Literature
My greatest strength lies in my ability to communicate effectively through my writing skills. As a freshman, I entered college certain that I wanted to be an English major because of my love of literature. I had a rather romantic picture in my mind as to what my studies would include: late nights relaxing with a cup of tea and a Virginia Woolf novel. Though my courses did offer me the opportunity to read many fabulous works of literature, they also challenged my analytical skills far more than I ever imagined. Most of the late nights I spent were not with a cup of tea, but in the library researching critical theory or at my computer, devising my own critical perspective on a novel. Though my course of study was in reality far different from what I imagined as an eighteen-year-old, I soon learned that the sense of satisfaction I gained from critical thinking and writing far outweighed the guilty pleasures of reading. Thus, in my junior and senior years, I have learned to use my love of literature to enhance my practical writing skills, further my own knowledge, and help those in need.

What Good is Care Without Compassion?

What Good is Care Without Compassion?
The aids hospice reeked from disease and neglect. On my first day there, after an hour of ?training,? I met Paul, a tall, emaciated, forty-year-old aids victim who was recovering from a stroke that had severely affected his speech. I took him to General Hospital for a long-overdue appointment. It had been weeks since he had been outside. After waiting for two and a half hours, he was called in and then needed to wait another two hours for his prescription. Hungry, I suggested we go and get some lunch. At first Paul resisted; he didn?t want to accept the lunch offer. Estranged from his family and seemingly ignored by his friends, he wasn?t used to anyone being kind to him ? even though I was only talking about a Big Mac. When it arrived, Paul took his first bite. Suddenly, his face lit up with the biggest, most radiant smile. He was on top of the world because somebody bought him a hamburger. Amazing. So little bought so much. While elated that I had literally made Paul?s day, the neglect and emotional isolation from which he suffered disgusted me. This was a harsh side of medicine I had not seen before. Right then and there, I wondered, ?Do I really want to go into medicine??

Hamlet: An Instrument of Life - Hamlet's Contribution To the Play

Hamlet: An Instrument of Life - Hamlet's Contribution To the Play
Samuel Johnson writes "Hamlet is through the piece rather an instrument

than an agent." This statement is true, it is exhibited in several ways. The

manner in which Hamlet?s father manifests himself is an indication of his true

intentions. Hamlet acts as an earthly means of revenge, he is the output for

actions directed by a mortal being. Inner weakness has riddled Hamlet?s life, it

runs rampant in his decisions, or lack of, and has plagued his fate. His

inability to overcome insecurity, procrastination, and an over analytical mind

contribute, overwhelmingly, to his downfall. Hamlet allows negative character

attributes to steer his life, the point being, He is an instrument of his own

indecision, which spawned from flaws within his character. Establishing Hamlet?s

sanity is a difficult task. It?s stability in his life is questionable, but his

contemplation of madness has left him vulnerable to its control. This control

has led Hamlet to act outside of character and in an extremely peculiar fashion.

Hamlet is an instrument of his father, his own self, and of sanity.

Should We Legalize Marijuana?

Should We Legalize Marijuana?
In the perspective of America?s war on drugs, marijuana is one of the biggest enemies. And since alcohol and tobacco, two life threatening substances, are legal it is a relevant question to ask why marijuana is illegal. The taxpayers of America can partly answer this question when they fill out their tax forms and when they hear the hash rhetoric used against marijuana by the government. The fact that marijuana is illegal is sufficiently caused by the amount of money, jobs, and pride invested in the drug war. In other words, the government cannot turn back now.
