Garbage in its Place

There is nothing worse than seeing garbage blowing down the street of your neighborhood, or finding broken shards of glass at the local swimming hole where children play. Wildlife is just as vulnerable to garbage and many have lost their lives after becoming tangled in waste or mistaking garbage for food. It is up to each of us to make an effort to minimize this unsightly, and sometimes hazardous, problem.

Theories of the Extinction of the Dinosaurs

Theories of the Extinction of the Dinosaurs
Controversy surrounds the extinction of the dinosaurs. According to one theory, dinosaurs were slowly driven to extinction by environmental changes linked to the creeping withdrawal of shallow seas from the continents at the end of the dinosaur era. Proponents of this theory propose that dinosaurs dwindled in number and variety over several million years.

Geography Environment

Geography Environment
geography notes
? Since European settlement between 78 & 100 plant species have become are extinct. 150-200 under threat.
? genetic diversity ? safeguard species diversity. Large range of genetic forms within each species. Genetic variations.
? Extinct- disappearance of species after thorough searching (some extinction is natural)
? At risk- in danger of becoming extinct
? Endangered- close to extinction in the wild unless something is done the species could disappear altogether
? Vulnerable- The step before endangered
? Rare- few of a particular species remain , less serious category than endangered
? Extinction can occur naturally because of climatic change which affects the vegetation on which animals depend.
? megafauna-large Australian mammals from the ice age
? Aborigines 50000 yrs ago modified asia Australia bridge vegetation through burning it out resulting in dry arid landscapes. This also could have made extinct the megafauna.

Why You Should Not Feed Wild Animals

Why You Should Not Feed Wild Animals
I remember being a little boy crying as I watched a zoo monkey eat my chocolate ice cream bar. Animal natural instincts are designed for their own survival, which means fulfilling their basic needs, including food and water. They will do anything it takes to get food, learning and adapting from each new experience. US Geological Survey wants to make it very clear to prohibit any feeding of wildlife. I wish to quickly cover three points why you should not feed wild animals. One, feeding wildlife disrupts natural cycles, creating dependencies. Two, it is unsafe for both you and the animal. Three, processed human food is unhealthy for wild animals. If you do your part by not feeding wild animals and letting your friends and family know how important it is, nature will remain in harmony.

The Recovery Of The Bald Eagle

Most experts expected the bald eagle to become extinct during the 20th century, but this American symbol has since reversed its decline and begun to recover. Experts realized in 1940 that the species had become endangered, and a law was passed to offer it protection from hunters- the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Even after the hunting stopped, there was still a decline in numbers due to the rampant use of DDT. The bald eagle was included on the endangered species lis...

Water and the Environment

Water and the Environment
Dear Whoever, I am writing to you as I am disgusted at the state of the rivers in the countryside, I am sure you are unaware of these issues as no action has been taken to try to solve this problem Here are a few cases of the very many rivers which have suffered: Site ? River Kennet Problem Low flows caused by Water Company licensed abstractions. Taking water could lead to the river drying up, killing wildlife such as Water Crowfoot and the Desmoulin Whorl Snail. Low water levels could also prevent vegetation on banks of rivers not to grow. Solution This problem could be resolved by monitoring and limiting the amount of water being abstracted from this river. You could also make a change in the contract with the Water Company by limiting the amount of water taken in the summer so the river doesn?t dry up, you could also keep extra water in storage in the winter so you don?t need to abstract in the summer. Monitoring & limiting water abstraction and buying storage containers would mean hiring new staff or buying new technology, either way money would have to be spent, this means that water rates would have to be increased. The public would have to decide what they wanted, increased rates or things leaving the same.

Man Vs. The Environment

Man Vs. The Environment
The environment can be something as vast as global weather patterns or as simple as the desert regions. With the advent of many technologies, the delicate balance of the environment has been upset (Elliot, 1961, p. 392). Strip mining, slash and burn farming, damming of rivers, and the extinction of many species of plants and animals have all lead to the permanent changing of the environment. Some say the change is for good, and others say for the change is for worse, but what is good about the ozone hole, rising global temperatures, and over irrigation causing the spread of arid conditions in once fertile locations (Eitzen, 2000, p. 79).
Is this interference the fault of the capitalist sys-tem or just the mortal man? In my opinion it is the fault of the man for having, the attitude of use what we need and do not worry about the concencuios. Man started the raping of earth back when the first colonist made the long voyage across the Atlantic to start their new life in America. Uncontrolled burning of the forest was done to make way for the intruders’ villages, towns, and cities. Once estab-lished the settlers needed more room for farms and bigger cities so again they pushed into the forest causing the Na-tive Americans and the wildlife to withdraw further into interior of the continent.
